Selection Criteria
The content included in Mexico in History has been selected in close collaboration with academic subject experts, collections specialists at The Bancroft Library, and under the guidance of the Editorial Board. The documents included in this resource were selected to cover five main thematic areas:
- Indigenous Language and Contact (c.1500-c.1810)
- Colonial Era Mexico (c.1500-c.1810)
- Religious Sermons (1617-1860)
- Independence and the National Period (1810-1880)
- The Mexican Revolution (1880-1929)
With the resource spanning over four centuries from c.1500-1929, the selected content therefore explores the evolution of Mexico from Spanish colonialism and the formation of New Spain, through the Mexican War of Independence to the Mexican Revolution. Central to the development of Mexico in History was ensuring a wide variety of source types were selected to truly encompass the full extent of this period in Mexican history, including correspondence, maps, religious sermons, legal papers, photographs, inquisition records, illustrations, laws and proclamations, vocabularies, land grants, and newspaper clippings.
A note on exclusions
Where exclusions have been made, this is largely due to:
- Collections falling outside the defined remit of this resource
- Existing open-access content
- Copyright and permission considerations
- Data protection concerns
